The Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants is currently engaged in two projects designed to serve immigrant and refugee youth throughout the province of Ontario.

Services for Youth in Newcomer Communities

Services for Youth in Newcomer Communities is an ambitious project being run by OCASI. The goal of this project is to develop a guide for settlement and other social service workers on the best practices to work with and counsel newcomer youth. The guide will be the result of research, consultation and a one-day colloquium.

Research will be conducted by youth and service providers, after receiving training on community-based research methods. The findings of this research will then be shared at a colloquium attended by newcomer youth workers and leaders within the newcomer youth community. The outcome of this discussion will be the development of a much-needed guide of best practices for working with newcomer youth.

Newcomer Youth Website

The newcomer youth website is an exciting new project by OCASI. The website will be a place where newcomer youth can get information about the issues that affect them. They will also have the opportunity to interact with and learn from the experiences of other newcomer youth, Canadian youth and youth workers. Visitors to the website will have a wide variety of ways to get the information they need. For example, there will be a directory of youth-serving organizations, a local event and workshop calendar, a discussion forum moderated by other newcomer youths and youth workers, a live chat, a multimedia gallery of work submitted by youth, and numerous articles dealing with issues important to newcomer youth.
